Security
New statutory requirements derived from the International Ship and
Port Facility (ISPS) Code of the International Maritime Organisation
(IMO) include a wide range of measures dedicated to the aim of protecting
ships and port facilities against terrorist attacks and interference.
According to this Code, all port facilities serving
ships engaged in international traffic with a gross tonnage in excess
of 500 must carry out a risk analysis, and use this as the basis for
drawing up a plan of preventive action. These new statutory requirements
had to be fulfilled by 1 July 2004.
We complied with the requirements of the IMO,
and met all the targets expected of us within the allotted
time. This included the drawing up of a detailed plan of preventive
action and the execution of comprehensive technical measures;
also our silo foreman, Mr Willi Meyer, and his deputy, Mr Uwe
Tiedemann, received training at the Fortbildungszentrum Hafen
Hamburg e.V. (FZH) [Further Training Centre of the Port of Hamburg,
Reg. Soc.], acquiring a qualification as ‘Port Facility Security
Officers’ (PFSOs).
The plan of preventive action drawn up by us with a view to ensuring
operational security, and the measures following from it, were subjected
to inspection by the responsible authority in June 2004, and received
official accreditation.
The certificate shown below thus attests that our
company complies with the requirements defined by the ISPS Code
and SOLAS XI-2 (an international convention for the safeguarding of
human life at sea) to the fullest possible extent.
